This song might sound like a simple lovers’ quarrel (and it is on some level), but I feel like we’ve been watching two political parties trying to burn down the country they supposedly love and have been voted into office to serve and protect, each side blaming the other. I gave up in that song. If something’s not worth saving, I felt ready to strike the match.

lyrics

You want to write it down

Every wrong I can’t erase

So let me help you out

I’ll light both sides of the page

No one ever said this would be easy

No one ever said this would be fair

But I can burn the house we built together

And we can stop pretending that we care

I CAN FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE

LEAVE THE ASHES IN THE RAIN

Well are you happy now?

You don’t have to carry all the weight

Wouldn’t want to bring you down

While we’re going up in flames

No one ever said this would be easy

And no one ever said it’d be this hard

Why should I try to hold it all together

When you’re the one who’s tearing us apart

I CAN FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE

IF YOU NEED SOMEONE TO BLAME

I CAN FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE

LEAVE THE ASHES IN THE RAIN

Now I know nothing’s forever

Honestly, honestly

I CAN FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE

IF YOU NEED SOMEONE TO BLAME

I CAN FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE

LEAVE THE ASHES IN THE RAIN

No one ever said it would be easy

No one ever said I can fight fire
