about

January 29 - 30, 2017
I wrote this song as the airport protests raged around the U.S. in response to Trump’s Muslim ban. In the wake of the ban, I watched so many people hide behind religious reasons to deny humanity and compassion to innocent people and refugees of war-torn regions all over the world. Nebraska is a beacon for refugees — the state has welcomed more refugees than any other in the country. I was honored to have my friends in Omaha who run a non-profit call the Refugee Empowerment Center put me in touch with the director of the Umoja (“Unity”) Choir of Burundian and other African refugees to sing on this song.

lyrics

It was meant to be simple

The way that we love each other

It was mean to be simple

Just one golden rule

If I’m caught in the river

Tell me what would you do?

If you can see that I’m drowning

And reaching out for you

HOLD ON

HOLD ON TO ME

You ever thought of the language

The one that we all speak?

The golden weight letters —

I hear your fear and your anger

But can you hear my heart break?

It could be simple

If you would just listen when I say

HOLD ON

HOLD ON TO ME

You ever think of my fingers

When you join your hands to pray

Cause I’m singing your hymns

When I’m crying

HOLD ON

HOLD ON TO ME
